To implement the national Safety Production Month activities and respond to the company’s call to “Fulfill safety responsibilities and promote safe development,” at exactly 5 p.m. on June 15, the Rare Earth Elements R&D Department actively organized and conducted a safety drill for hazardous chemical leaks. Prior to the drill, safety officer Wang Binghuo gave a detailed briefing on the significance of the hazardous chemical leak drill. Lean specialist Liu Yi then explained the drill’s procedure to everyone.
The safety drill officially began, and everyone was on high alert. The entire drill proceeded smoothly and in an orderly manner according to the planned schedule. After employees discovered a hazardous chemical leak on the desk, they immediately notified their colleagues on duty, then swiftly reported the incident to the shift supervisor at the central control room, the supervising engineer, and the department manager. The drill participants quickly ventilated the area, set up warning lines, put on gas masks and specialized gloves, and then sprayed sodium carbonate before rinsing thoroughly with copious amounts of water. Finally, the supervising engineer—wearing full protective gear—used pH test strips to conduct on-site acceptance checks. Once the drill concluded, safety officer Wang Binghuo delivered a review and summary. As the first formal hazardous chemical leak drill conducted at the central control room, this exercise demonstrated clear procedures and well-organized workflows from planning to execution. However, there is still room for improvement in the selection of props as well as in the level of tension among personnel and the smoothness of coordination between team members. These insights will provide valuable lessons for future drills.
The successful completion of this hazardous chemical spill exercise has strengthened the safety awareness of control room staff and R&D engineers, enhanced their emergency response capabilities for hazardous chemical spills, and further fostered a safe production environment within the Elements Division.
